Summary

 

Position Summary

 

Responsible for:

  1. Customer satisfaction
  2. Perform nutrition assessment and develop appropriate patient nutrition support therapies
  3. Participate in education to promote safe, appropriate and cost-effective nutrition support techniques
  4. Coordinate, perform and evaluate discharge instruction for home nutrition patients
  5. Conduct ongoing quality improvement of nutrition support therapies
  6. Supervising and managing physical resources

 

Minimum Requirements

 

Education          

  • Registered dietitian (RD) with BS or Master’s degree in nutrition or dietetics

 

Experience         

 

  • One year or more with a nutrition support team or three years medical nutrition therapy experience preferred

 

License/Registration/Certifications         

 

  • Maintains RD status through American Dietetic Association Board certification
  • Must complete nutrition support certification within one year and maintain certification

Core Job Responsibilities

 

  • Designs and modifies nutrition support therapies to the individual patient
  • Incorporates national enteral and parenteral guidelines to work towards minimizing risk and improving patient outcomes
  • Edits nutrition support policy and procedures to professional society guidelines, e.g. ASPEN
  • Adjusts nutrition support therapies to regional and national product shortages
  • Provides nutrition support therapy education to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare team members as needed
  • Follows attendance, dress, education (including continuing education) and safety polices
  • Complies with appropriate regulatory agencies’ requirements, e.g. DHEC, DEA, etc.
  • Directs staff and encourages teamwork to ensure department workload duties are correctly assigned throughout the staff on a day to day basis
  • Completes appropriate formulary substitutions in order to optimize physical resources
  • Participates in departmental and hospital activities such as, departmental in-services, participation in hospital and/or departmental committees.  Participates in departmental and hospital activities on performance Improvement
  • Exercises professional judgment, discretion, and initiates communication with physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team when there is question of appropriateness or a recommendation to ensure most appropriate nutrition therapy for the patient
  • Alerts and/or advises physician/nursing of food-drug interaction. 
  • Other duties as assigned
